R&D Technician

Lawrence MA-based, 99Degrees was founded in 2013 to transition US manufacturing into an advanced manufacturing industry through speed, agility, technology and a commitment to our region and workforce. We are a US contract manufacturer who produces technical activewear and wearable technologies for the most forward thinking global and high growth brands. We incubate advanced concepts, develop, prototype and sample, and produce in the US with unprecedented speed and agility. We have been recognized with top prizes from MIT’s Inclusive Innovation Competition, MassChallenge and EforAll business accelerators and have been featured on NPR, PRI, MSNBC, and in the Boston Globe.

 

HOW THIS ROLE SUPPORTS OUR VISION

In order for a US apparel manufacturer to compete in the global supply chain, we must combine unprecedented speed and agility with innovation and technology. We must not just focus on strong operations but we must look to the future to inform how we use semi automation, the engineering design process, and continuous improvement efforts to create new machinery, jigs, assists that will enable new levels of speed, agility, and efficiencies. Our R&D technicians, engineers, and innovation team lead these efforts.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

This role requires that you put your technical expertise to work to research and develop equipment, manufacturing aids, and mechanical solutions that improve quality and efficiencies while reducing complexity and cost.  You will also:

 

  • Proactively identify areas for improvements.

  • Set up and operate production equipment in order to inspect and troubleshoot problems.

  • Design and create and/or source prototype parts, manufacturing aids, equipment, instrumentation, and fixtures to improve quality, efficiencies, and methods.

  • Execute testing and validation protocols to ensure your work’s quality, functionality, and adherence to specifications.

  • Create detailed documentation of suggested improvements. Generate new standard operating, testing, and quality procedures.

  • Participate in continuous improvement activities relating to development, manufacturing, testing, and innovation.

  • Collaborate with maintenance of the Machine Shop to strengthen internal problem solving, and technical capabilities.

  • And any other related task that the supervisor deems to be necessary.

and have the following qualifications:

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION

  • Technical Associates degree or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum 3-5 years in a manufacturing environment.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual – Spanish and English.

  • Creativity to think of new systems, processes, and methods.

  • Math skills to understand complex mathematical analysis, calculus, and math for design and troubleshooting.

  • Mechanical skills to understand mechanical concepts and processes easily, as well as use equipment and tools to generate continuous improvements.

  • Problem-solving to develop new solutions to problems, identify the source of the problem and create and test solutions.

  • Teamwork to understand bottlenecks, pain points, and challenges in order to develop systems and create solutions.

  • Listening skills to understand multiple perspectives and insights from workers, teammates and management.

  • Communication skills to communicate your plans, thoughts, and rationale.

  • Project management to manage time, supplies, personnel and company resources.

  • Basic machining to create solutions or work with machinists to create solutions.

  • Computer proficiency. Ability to use CAD programs like AutoCAD and Solidworks to design parts, Mechanical dexterity and technical drawing understanding.

  • Ability to perform minor electrical work (cable making, component replacement).
